Similar Songs - State of Shock 'Money Honey' and Supernova 'Be Yourself'

I'm a songwriter and I'll admit, on occassion it can happen that I'll write a song and then hear an old song or something playing on the radio that has some similarities. It's not done on purpose, I'm not trying to copy something that's already done, but when you think that thousands of popular songs use the same chord progression, is it really that hard to believe that in some cases even part of the melody can be similar?

I recently heard the new hit song Money Honey by 'State of Shock'. I don't want to take anything away from these guys. It's an extremely catchy song and I'm loving it.

The first time I heard it was on the radio while I was driving with my girlfriend. She starts singing the chorus since she's been telling me about this song for a while and it finally plays when we're together and the first thing that pops in my head is that I've heard something way too close to this already. I couldn't pin point it.

A few minutes later it clicked. The chorus reminds me so much of Be Yourself (and 5 Other Cliches) (New Album Version) by 'Supernova'; the super band which created a reality TV series around finding their lead singer.

You be the judge. Download both songs through the following links or your favorite music download service and you'll see what I mean:

Money Honey
Be Yourself (and 5 Other Cliches) (New Album Version)

Overall, I like 'State of Shocks' song a lot more. I find it a much better song overall; melodies, structure, and production. I'll leave this for a rant on another blog but the winner of the reality TV series Rockstar Supernova (Lukas Rossi) is the only good thing in that band.

In any case, this is my first 'Similar Song' segment but I foresee more in the near future so stay posted. Also, if you're more of a CD buyer and interested in checking out the albums with the songs mentioned in this blog, check out the following links for the best prices new and used:
