Tom Petty was no good at the SuperBowl
It was no good, I don't care what they say.
I'll admit off the bat I'm not a huge fan of Tom Petty but I respect him very much as far as song writing goes. He's got awesome tunes, hands down, but the half-time show is not only about great tunes. It's suppose to be entertaining and this year had to be of the dullest hands down. Good thing for the commercials.
I have no beef with the come-back era but if you have been around for so many years and you want to still be up on stage doing your thing, at least look like you're putting everything you've got into it. Take Prince, now he gave a show last half-time. Take the Rolling Stones. Mick Jagger can probably out run most high school gym teachers and I've never seen him hold back live. This year you had Tom Petty on stage and performing as if he was at a garage practice. Even the singing lacked 'ummmf'. You don't want to blow your voice, that's cool, but you have 4 songs, not a 2 hour set. If I saw the same type of performance at a bar, I would not have been far from blown away, but we're talking SuperBowl, not a cover band playing for tips at the corner of the street.
I'm not saying it's easy to get up there after doing it for so long and still go at it 100% but if you don't plan to or can no longer, don't accept the gig, or for the ones in charge of the entertainment for SuperBowl, don't pitch it to an act unless you fully believe it will be a performance to remember. Did it even get people talking enough for it to be worth it? I'm missing where it was a good move by anyone for Tom Petty to be the half-time show.
Sorry Tom, awesome tunes, great band, but just my personal opinion here, not a good performance last night.
